Roulette- The Basics,
Before going into detail regarding specific betting strategies it is important to explain the fundamentals to playing roulette.
The roulette wheel and table as shown in the image below are comprised of “sectors” coloured red, black and green and numbered from 0 to 36. The principle of the game is to guess where the ball will land after it has been spun by the croupier or if you're playing online by the automated croupier. Players have a varied selection of betting options that have variable fixed odds that depend on many factors. As an example we will assume the role of a player for a single spin of the wheel and go into detail as to how the game is played.
Whether in a real casino or online, players will be given the opportunity by the croupier to “place your bets”, at which point you have a short period of time to make your selections and place your chips accordingly. For the purposes of this explanation we have chosen to make a single bet of £1. Our bet is on the number 17, so we place a £1 in the centre of the sector on the table marked with the number 17. Now we have placed our bets we must wait for the croupier to spin the wheel and release the ball. The croupier will first set the wheel in motion by spinning it in either a clockwise or anti clockwise direction, and then spinning the ball in the opposite direction to that of the wheel. Gravity and momentum will take over and after a few spins the wheel and ball slow down sufficiently for the ball to fall into one of the grooved sectors on the wheel. Once the ball has done so, and the wheel has slowed to a speed that will not permit the ball to jump from its position, the croupier will confirm the winning sectors. Winning bets would then be paid according to the fixed odds for each table sector and losing bets would be removed from the table in preparation for the next game.
